A Beautiful Mind

At Hero Headquarters I was doing some Google Image Searching with the staff and our new intern Dora came up with Merckx_Colnago. This beautful image came up with this link which is some sort of Flickr search engine. I do not think I have ever seen the Flickr Hive Mind but I am a fan already. More importantly the photograph above is such an expression of love, and frame obsession that its mere existence has the psycho-physical effect usually associated with petting a feline or new born puppy in hospice.

Cadel Evans-World Champion

After Cadel Evan's attack at the Tour Down Under I am thinking we may be in store for an incredible year of the World Champion representing the arc en ciel like no other. Is it Possible that his supposed reputation for sitting on wheels and critique thereof has propelled a do or die style of racing that won him the World Champion Jersey? And his recent racing panache seems to be creating a level of respect that transcend his You tube moments at Le Tour. Whether he gains the wins he covets this year may not matter if he races like he did in Australia. I cannot wait for Liege, Amstel Gold and maybe even Flanders...

To Be or Not to Be

The photograph above asks one question 12-25 or 12-27? March 20 is the official start of Spring. It is time to poder such things.

Lazer Genesis

No other helmet, other than the Cinelli hairnet or Specialized S-Works helmet, is as Euro-pro as the Lazer Genesis. I bought one at the Palatine bike swap to replace the Bell Sweep R that I've plain worn out through three years of use, including its involvement in several low-speed crashes in cyclocross races and the loss of two of its rear "spines."

I took the Genesis for its first ride upon my noggin (and my first ride in 1.5 weeks) yesterday. Two freds on Sheridan opted to ignore my subtle index finger lift of a hello, but the xXx guy gave me the nod. He knows the score and scoop.

Cezanne I am not. The still life is the most difficult assignment in art. I challenge you to take your favorite bike part, some natural light and make something beautiful.

View Master

Check out the yellow mountain bike.

I think the tam o'shanter in this picture would be a good model for official Tenspeed Hero Hats.

You should see these in 3D.

Merckx View Master

Christmas gift from THC to me. I will soon scan the View Master images to post. Unfortunately they will not be in the same spectacular 3d that they are in when viewed through the viewer.

Riding with the Yeti

A lot goes through your mind when a couple heroes pull you out of bed and take you on a 27 degree ride. Frozen Toes, Numb fingers and being dragged on the Prairie Path from Wheaton to St. Charles by a Yeti were on the top of my list. I never thought I would ride the path on ice but I did. I have never had a frozen water bottle where no water came forth but it happened. However, 35 miles later and rolling back to Villa Park I can say that I was warm, my toes just starting to get a bit numb, and the closest thing to a Yeti I saw was an icicle dangling off Daddy Cool's rear dropout. Three cheers to winter riding...

official hero sandwich

I tested this sandwich out on a bunch of Heroes and it seems to be a hit, it was scarfed down in a matter of seconds. It is because of this that I am naming it The Official Sandwich of Ten Speed Hero. You can make it at home yourself (asiago bread, spinach, fried egg, avocado, salt, pepper), but it tastes best straight from Hero HQ.

Taking the measure of Ken.. (for his cycling fit)

How to cut a Carbon Steerer Tube

I tried Luke Hero's method of cutting on the steerer tube on my Look HSC 4 SL fork -- I think it might be too short.

How to Cut an Integrated Seatpost

First hold the top tube with a firm grip. Then take your JA Henckels German Cleaver and and with one swing you will have a perfectly cut integrated seat post. No need to mark, just eyeball it.

What Heroes Do...

1. Only pay MSRP for Tubes, Cliff Bars and Bar Tape
2. Look at Ebay at least 20 times a week.
3. Talk about Todd’s ebay purchase once every two weeks
4. Make references to cycling an average of 28 times a week.
5. Look at Tenspeed Hero 4 times a day on average
6. Pick up their bike at least once a week whether they ride or not.
7. Drink too much beer
8. Ride their Trainers 10% less than they tell their fellow Heroes
9. Email an ebay link to each other at least once a week.
10. Dream of winning the Double Loop

Tenspeedies: Best Climb of the Year-Blue Mounds

Hands down the best climb of the year was the Blue Mounds climb in Southern Wisconsin. Thanks to Ben Hero and Todd Hero for doing some recon early in the year. Something makes me think we will climb this at least three or four times next year. This is where we met Kevin Hero and found out what a good guy he is.

Ambrosio on Ebay

A quick search for Luke Hero's Ambrosio Nemesis wheels on ebay will reveal super model Alessandra Ambrosio. Luke's wheels are the preferred ride for many cyclists at the Spring Classics.

Colnago C40 Mapei

Saturday Morning, January 9, Matt Hero and I stripped the Colnago C40 Mapei down. As a note of caution to the Heroes we found an amazing amount of dust and sand in the bottom bracket area. So if you are bored this winter it may be a good area to inspect. This bike is beautifully proportioned when the frame is bare.

Ken Hero to Ride Merckx Team SC for 2010

Tonight Ben Gill and I met with Ken Fandell and scoped out his new ride for 2010. Photos and Interview to come. Over Bourbon and Beer we tried to figure a way to give him a build for $1000. It will not be easy but it will be beautiful. He will be the 2nd marathoner to become a Hero in less than a year and we expect great things on the path. Three Cheers to Ken.

Campagnolo 11 Speed Rings

This new 11- speed chainring came in the mail today from Colorado. Ebay $50. The guy was selling a few of them and the price is about a 1/3 of the price of one at retail. I always imagine some Team Mechanic at the end of the year selling the extras for some beer or rent money. This can happen when your team switches components for the next season. If so I am sure it is a well deserved bonus. The color is dark grey and is supposedly 4 times as tough as Campagnolo previous anodization on Record 10.
